The Dorsal Fin
Jun 11, 2025 · 3 pitches. Follow. The approach beta is lacking and confusing. We got lost but eventually found a way. Follow the trail from the driveway to the vaults to the west beneath and around the Fin formation. The trail will eventually enter and ascend a large gully - once it opens up and you see a cluster of Cottonwoods, it’s time to start scrambling up and east towards the crest of the formation and the beginning of the route. Stay right when you can, should be 4th and low 5th class in places. Followed Ethan but could have led pitch 2 and 3. Pitch 1 was all slab and had a distinct crux which I didn’t send. Pitch 2 was favorite and super fun climbing - slab, thin dihedral with good gear, a sporty transition from the dihedral into the crack above to a 2 bolt anchor. Pitch 3 continued up the slanted exposed crack and ledge system until it climbs onto the slab above down the finish - easy 5.6 run out slab to the top. Fun route!! Rappel on the west side, chains.

Michael jumared up and didn’t have a great time but he wasn’t up for the climbing - dealing with tendon injury in wrist. Pitch 1 and 2 was burly 5.10 offwidth and crack so hard and intense. Pitch 3 was 5.9 chimney, offwidth, and cracks to an exposed traverse and short finger crack. Pitch 4 was a beautiful hand crack with tons fo exposure and an airy undercling traverse to a sustained offwidth to the top. Pitch 5 was a fun varied crack with a crux sequence through a steep dihedral and small feet. Bailed on the last 2 pitches because of time, run out start to pitch 6, and energy low.

Apr 19, 2025 · 4 pitches. Lead / Flash. Swapped leads with Ethan and Michael. We climbed it in 4 long pitches with an 80 m rope. Ethan climbed the first 3-4 pitches combining 1-2 and 3-4. I climbed the middle 5-7 pitches as a single pitch (lots of chimney climbing and one big loose block with chock all over it - lots of runouts). The money pitches are the last couple, nice hands and stemming to the top - Ethan climbed this pitch - the money pitch!! Started around 1230, on top at 5:15. We rappelled the route and used a tagline, which was a pain to pull. The rope got hung up on a ledge and I had to climb up 30 ft to retrieve it. We still made it down to the road for the last bus by 720! An epic and memorable day.
