What is Mountain Project?

REI's Mountain Project is a crowd-sourced guide to climbing areas and routes built by climbers just like you! Contributors add areas and routes, detailed descriptions, photos, ratings, and comments to bring you an extensive guide to climbing around the world, with more added every day. We've compiled all of this information online for easy research before you hit the road and as a mobile app to help you navigate while out there.

Why does REI provide these sites?

At REI, we believe that a life outdoors is a life well lived. REI provides this free guide to the outdoors as part of our commitment to inspiring, educating, and outfitting for a lifetime of outdoor adventure and stewardship.

Is this really free?

Yes! The website and mobile apps are completely free.

How to Use the Mountain Project Website

How is a climb's difficulty determined?

The difficulty displayed is the median value (not the average) of all the submissions given by users. The rating can change over time as more data is entered. After climbing a route, be sure to add your opinion!

How are star ratings calculated?

Star ratings are calculated as an average of all the votes for a given route. You can see the breakdown of individual ratings by clicking the details link next to the stars on near the top of the route page. Once you've climbed a route, don't forget to add your own vote too!

What is a tick and how do I add one?

Ticks help you keep track of what you've climbed. Your profile page will shows several charts breaking down your climbing activity and even has a map of everywhere you've climbed!

How can I add or remove a to-do from my to-do list?

You can add a route to your to-do list by clicking the "Add To-Do" button on any route page. To-dos will show up on your personal profile and are a great way to keep track of routes that you'd like to climb. If you would like to remove a to-do, head to back to the route page and click the "On Your List" button to remove it.

How can I message other contributors through the site?

You can directly message any other member of Mountain Project Project by clicking the "Contact" button on their profile page. They will be able to respond directly to you via email. Responding directly to a message via email will share your email address with the person who contacted you.
How to Use the Mountain Project Mobile App

Should I enable location services when I download the app?

Yes! This will allow the app to quickly show climbing areas near you, and when you're trying to find an area on the map, your location will be shown as a blue dot finding your way to the crag.

How do I download, update, or delete areas?

On the home screen, scroll down to the bottom and tap 'Manage Areas'. Be sure to download your area before heading out to climb!

Does the app really work offline?

Yes! Even without cell service, you'll be able to see the data and your location on the map. If you know you'll be taking the mobile app off the grid soon, you'll have an even better experience if you take a moment to scan around that area before going offline. This will allow the app to cache the background map. The data will display clearly whether you take this extra step or not, and you should always be able to see a blue dot indicating your exact location on the map.

How often is the data in the app updated?

The mobile app will automatically check for new data every two weeks. The data is updated weekly on Friday evenings. If you want to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information in your pocket for the weekend, you can delete and reinstall that area after the weekly update. Otherwise, your app will automatically update every two weeks.

Can I add areas, routes, comments, or photos from the mobile app?

At the moment, you cannot add those kinds of data from the mobile app. If you are online though, you can do those things from the web site, which works well on phones, though it is hard to type very much text on a phone!
My Profile

How can I create a profile?

You can create a profile using either your Facebook account or your email address and a password. If you choose Facebook, we'll never post for you and any communication from us will be directed to the email address that is linked to your Facebook account.

What should I do if I didn't receive a verification email?

When setting up your profile, you will need to verify your email. Sometimes the verification emails are accidentally filtered into a junk or spam folder. Check your spam folder to see if the email ended up there. If you are still unable to find the confirmation email, reach out to us at, and we will help you to confirm your account.

What does my point total mean?

Points are accumulated as you contribute content to the site. A breakdown of your points total can be found on your profile page.

How can I change my profile photo or edit my profile information?

On the website, click on your profile icon. Select "Your Profile" from the drop-down menu. From your profile page, you'll find the "Edit Profile" link just below your profile picture. This will allow you to edit your name as it appears on the site, your location, other interests, favorites, and club membership, as well as allow you to update your profile picture.

How can I update my email address?

On the website, click on your profile icon. Select "Account Settings" from the drop-down menu. From the account settings page, you'll be able to change your email address.

How can I reset my password?

On the website, click on your profile icon. Select "Account Settings" from the drop-down menu. From the account settings page, you'll be able to send a password reset email.

How can I delete or merge my profile?

If you'd like to delete your profile or merge two existing profiles, send us an email at with information on the account(s) that you would like to be deleted or merged.

How do I change my notification settings?

On the website, click on your profile icon. Select "Account Settings" from the drop-down menu. On the account settings page, look for the check box under the Emails section to turn on or off notifications for new comments on content you shared.
Improving Existing Content

Can I edit routes and areas that are already on the site?

In most cases, you can edit content you've submitted to the site. For all other content, such as descriptions, protection, map locations, route ordering, you can use the "Improve This Page" link found on each page.

How do I report content in closed areas or copyright violations?

If you find content that needs to be removed, please send us an email at with a link to the content and information clarifying why it should be removed.
Adding New Climbing Areas & Routes

How are areas and route organized?

Areas are arranged in a hierarchy from states (and countries) down to small crags and individual boulders. States can have any number and levels of sub-areas. Complicated areas will have more sub-areas than straightforward ones. Sub-areas can contain either more sub-areas OR routes, but not both.

Do I need to have climbed a route before adding it?

Usually you should have climbed a route before adding it. You will be able to describe it much better and more accurately after climbing it. There might rarely be times where you can accurately enter a route without climbing it (e.g., a sport route right next to one you climbed with nearly identical features and you were able to watch someone else and learn some beta from them).

Should I enter projects or potential routes?

No, please only enter complete routes that you've climbed and can accurately describe.

Should I enter all the areas and routes in my guidebook to 'build out' a crag?

No. While certain factual data is not copyrighted, if you haven't actually climbed the routes, you will not be able to describe them accurately. Leave them for someone else to enter.

How do I add an area?

First, find the parent area that contains this area. From that page, click 'Add To Page' on the top-right of the page and add your new area. Note you may need to first create intermediate sub-areas if they don't exist yet. For example, if you have a small new crag in Colorado, and it doesn't belong in any existing sub-area of Colorado, you may first need to create a region that contains your new crag and other nearby new crags.

How do I add a route?

First, make sure the appropriate sub-area exists for this route - usually a named crag. You may need to create the sub-area first. From the area page, click 'Add to Page' on the top right and add your route.

What should I know about copyrighted material?

Do not copy text or photos directly from another website, guidebook, or other publication. We want to respect copyrighted material, and we would rather hear about the experience in your own words anyway! If you know the original author or photographer, and they have given you permission to use the text or photos on Mountain Project, please have them send us an email at explicitly stating that they have granted you permission to use their material.
Approach and Descent Trails

What are Approach and Descent Trails?

These mark the way from your car, trailhead, or another trail to the base of the climbing area or route. Descents are from the summit of a climb back to the base, or some other logical endpoint. Descents are most useful for alpine routes.

How do I add one?

On any area page, look for the 'Add to Page' link near the top right of the page.

Can I add more than one for an area?

Yes. You might do this if there is more than one popular approach to an area, or if you need to create multiple branches to different parts of an area.

Do I need a GPS to create one?

No, you can use a phone app, such as Motion GPS or even Google Maps to record a route. If you know it very well, you can also just 'draw' it on a map right on Mountain Project.

Can I use this to document a traverse climb or technical hike?

No. While similar, we don't want to make Approach or Descent trails confusing with technical routes.

What about complicated areas, overlaps, or multiple nearby areas?

Use a single trail to get to the general area, then create shorter branches to the neighboring areas.

Do these need to follow established trails?

While these do NOT need to follow established hiking trails, they should follow the most common, most SUSTAINABLE route to the area. Social trails and wandering climbers cause signficant damage.
Regional Admins

What are Regional Admins?

Regional Admins are volunteers that help organize, review, and improve all the areas, routes, and photos that are submitted by general Mountain Project members. Each volunteer is responsible for one or more regions, states, or countries. Some are guidebook authors, some manage their Local Climbing Organizations, and all of them are passionate about helping make Mountain Project the best resource possible for climbers.

An Admin's job includes reviewing new content as it's submitted to the site, working with contributors to ensure routes and areas are well-described, dealing with Page Improvements, and generally keeping things organized. Regional Admins do NOT moderate the forum (that's done by REI staff).

How do you select Regional Admins?

Most Regional Admins are long-time members who have made substantial route and area contributions (many of our largest contributors are also Regional Admins). They understand how the site works, how to create high quality data, and have a huge capacity for detailed organization. We generally don't add more admins to regions that are well-covered, though we do have limited turnover.

If you would like to volunteer as a Regional Admin, you’re a top contributor in your area with extensive experience on Mountain Project, and your region does not have any (or many) existing admins, please email us via the ‘Contact’ link at the bottom of the page.

What if I have a disagreement with a Regional Admin?

Climbers are passionate about our limited resources and differences of opinion happen. You are welcome to use the 'Contact' link at the bottom of the page to explain the situation to the REI staff and we will work out a resolution with you and the Regional Admin.
