I Led p2, p3, p4b (this time started up on the LongRunoutSlab but then dropped to the gully on the right, gear not great, a red tricam in a waterpocket. a bit dirty and swing potential for follower, maybe best to stay up afterall?)

Aug 15, 2026 · TR. w K. 75F. Parked at trailhead (43.990944, -71.195056) with 3 boulders next to the road. 45min hike on an easy clean trail plus 15min scramble on a boulder field and on a leaf covered very steep ramp got us to the bottom of the route. We continued scrambling (roped in) up the nearby very vegetated and crambly nasty gully to gain the top (fantastic views) and lowered down to try out on TR p2. The top 6m of p2 are for sure a little overhang (the most vertical and exposed 5.5 I have been on so far) but with good holds and smallish to midsize gear. The crux (5.6?) might be the very topping out move (still protected: save a 0.75 cam). Anything below the overhang section seemed way easier (5.3/5.4?). Finally we rapped down: a huge tree has a cordolette still in good shape and a rap ring. Our first rap with a single 70m rope reached a foot wide ledge with two trees having still a couple of meters to spare. Our second rap from one of those two trees to the ground was much shorter. We'll have to come back to lead the whole thing: overall the route seemed to have protections where we may want them, although a bit vegetated and could use (and would deserve) more traffic.

Jul 29, 2026 · Lead / Onsight. w K. 55F at 9.30am when starting p1, 70F at summit early afternoon. K lead p1 stopping to belay at 55m, other options available a bit lower or higher. p1 felt harder and more sustained than the other pitches but no more than 5.3/5.4. We felt Regular Route is similar in style but at least one grade easier than The Trough at Tahquiz (we did that 2 days earlier). p2 of Regular Route is even easier than p1: mostly 5.1 with just one 5.2 move at the bulge where the open book turns a bit to the left. I moved 20ft = 7m right at the end of the open book to set p2 anchor so that looking up p3 looked easier (5.1) and very protected. After 40m of climbing on p3 I brought up my follower: lots of loose gravel in the upper portion. We finished the remaining 30m-40m with short rope simulclimb just for practice, but walking unropped would have been just fine.

My personal impressions of the grades: P1 35m 5.4; P2 55m 5.4 with two 5.5 moves, belayed at tree; P3 55m 5.3 belayed at tree; P4 15m unprotected 5.1 slab. Friction Descent 5.0 took 1h. Hike back another 45m. Being completely new to this area, my calibration impressions with other areas are that P1 of The Trough felt same grade as P1 of Knapsack Crack at Corrugation Corner or P1 of The Bomb at Eldorado Canyon, CO. P2 of The Trough felt same grade as P2 of Knapsack Crack, or last pitch of Green Route at Crow Hill, MA, and one grade easier than Thin Air at Cathedral, NH. The Trough overall felt one grade harder than Regular Route at Little Baldy.

From the top tree island walked down 30m-35m on the west face to the 2-bolt anchor with rings (metals in great conditions, but left bolt needs tightening; gear backup is available). From there rappelled 57m with 2 ropes to a pine tree skier-right (next time will look for the lower 2-bolts anchor instead to avoid the messy bushes). Finally down 30m to the end of clean rock (bottom was at least 10 more meters down among bushes and trees as previously reported). Climbing p1 was an easy 5.2 with a cool protected right corner. p2 is the real money pitch (3 starts) with 5.4 flakes, cracks and much gear 0.3 to #2 and nuts (next time I will split it in two so I don't need a double rack). K lead the 5.easy p3 staying climber-right on the sticky slab of the ridge line arete to enjoy more of the views. The views from the top are truely unreal as someone else already commented. Also good altitude so pleasant low 70s even when upper 80s everywhere else in NH. And very quiet: nobody was there even on the Success Trail on a beatiful Sunday afternoon.

I only had sizes up to #3 (not great, takes bigger but I made it work without runout thanks to other placements outside the chimney in cracks on the right). Getting up into the chimney still hard (at least 5.6 if not more) but finally doable on lead.

Bushwacked across from Matther Tyler point (30min). Climbed 4 pitches as 2 parties of 2 (L+Y, K+B) in 2h50m. Mostly 5.0 to 5.3 climbing with just a couple of 5.4 moves here and there that are anyway avoidable staying right. Some runouts of very easy 5.0-5.1 terrain, The harder parts can all be protected well. On upper pitches got some gusts from the summit NW 50mph wind. Scrambled straight up in the chossy gully (not bad) to the car in 1h15m.

Jun 29, 2026 · Follow. w K and N. Approach required 30min of hiking on snow with microspikes and ice axe. The "crux" layback on p3 seemed well protected and not too hard maybe a soft 5.6. However the top pitches felt much less protected with some easy 5.3 but runout long sessions, such as on the ridge horizontal traverse. True alpine on the top pitches also because of the climbing on some big blocks of rock that may not be completely attached to the earth and just "sitting there without moving" because of their weight. First Rap anchor not easy to find: can be seen only at the very last minute climber right after a 15ft-5m exposed downclimb.

Jun 28, 2026 · Lead. w K. Followed p1 (5.4+): we used a crack taking midsize to #3 gear to integrate the bolts just a couple of feet to the side. Lead p2 (5.3): could still find a couple of trad placements to integrate the bolts. K lead p3. trad gear on the crack just to get to clip the first exposed bolt. Protected 5.4+ crux move around the corner with other two closely spaced bolts right above it. Higher climbing is easier 5.3 but larger spacing between bolts with harder to find trad. The top 2 bolts anchor is very unconfortable for a 2 people rap setup, so we both lead and downclimbed it separately (treating it as a single pitch) and then rapped from p2 anchor to the ground with a single 70m and a lot of rope to spare.

Built a gear anchor on the large ledge above the rap anchor: super easy, 100x more comfortable than a hanging belay on the rap anchor, and "a must" to keep the rap anchor free if another party is coming down from p2. Lead p2 slightly harder than p1 and less protected: many 5.0 scrambles with some harder 5.4 chimney moves. Not always well protected. The chockstone might be 5.4?, but I preferred not to pull on it and went out around right on a 15ft=5m runout slab.

Jun 21, 2026 · Lead / Flash. w G. We came up from the Cave Route. I lead Knight's Move as two pitches. I used a very long sling from the rapp anchor to protect the follower downclimb. The follower unclipped, pulled and recovered it AFTER stepping over to the traverse ledge. The follower also then further downclimbed to the lower ledge with better hands & feet to reduce swing potential. The crux (well protected, maybe 5.4 for Ragged Mt but at the very least 5.5+ if not 5.6 in other places) was the first vertical boulder problem after the traverse. The Crack above was about 5.4. At the very top of the route I used the two bolts anchor far left with a directional on the small tree over the corner/crack.

K led also p1b the long traverse (good protection before the crux slabby start of the traverse, she also found two solid pieces in a horizontal crack right after that crux to protect my following: a 0.4 and a blue totem. I lead the last corner pitch (crux is getting arround the roof, I went left and felt at least 5.5 if not 5.6 but well protected). Several trees at the top for anchor (long cordolettes useful).

Jun 4, 2026 · Lead / Redpoint. w K who lead half of p2. p1 was wet on the "regular" way ie slab traversing right around the overlaps (5.5), so I tried a variation going straight up on the taller overlaps (#3 protects well the one 5.6 move). all higher pitches not wet. linking p3+p4 with 70m rope worked well. got some drag on p5 must extend well all protections, used different tree climber right for belay to avoid undesired pebbles dropping directly over my follower
