Climbing Near Cornwall, Connecticut

Some nice boulders here off the AT in Cornwall Bridge, CT. Really cool rounded, slopey, gneiss with huecos in the rock. Almost farley quality. Sorta unusual. Nice place to spend the day. Many boulders in the area, but are spread out requiring short drives between areas. Please respect private property. Boulders are along the AT near its crossing with Cornwall Bridge Rd. ( Route 4 )

A small rocky bump at the western toe of Hough Mountain, there are several ledges of fine-grained, purple-ish granitic gneiss that are full of comfortable slot cracks that are great for beginners or for warming up en route to the rest of Hough Mountain. The best of the ledges is just west of the top of the hill, about 14’ tall with a perfectly flat and clear landing zone. Heading south on the unpaved River Road from Lime Rock Station Road, drive cautiously around the minefield of deep potholes (SUV or pickup truck with high ground clearance strongly recommended), and park at the pull-off on your left just before the road crosses to the waterward side of the old railroad tracks. Follow the hunter’s trail across the small clearing, and continue bushwhacking towards the SE for 380 yards. Watch out for thorny underbrush, and check yourself for ticks.

One of the most difficult boulders on the mountain so far. Thin, shallow cracks on a clean slab face (left side) and on an overhanging face (right side). Perfect landing. Short approach - 220 yards SSW from the Deplora-Boulder.
