The two areas Jefferson County Open Space intends to close in Clear Creek Canyon, shown on the attached maps, encompass the active eagle nests. If the Clear Creek eagles continue to nest in the active nests, these areas will remain closed from February 1 through July 31. If the eagles choose different nesting sites, the closures will be adjusted accordingly to protect those eagles during their breeding season.
Currently, rock climbing areas that fall inside of the seasonal raptor closures include:
Blonde Formation
Bumbling Stock
Evil Area
Ghost Crag
Highlander
Skinny Legs
Stumbling Block
Tetanus Garden
Fault Caves
Description
Face climb straight up past two bolts then trend a bit left to the arete passing several more bolts. Finish on the headwall above. The crux is probably getting to the first bolt, but the grade seems to stay pretty constant all the way to the 9th bolt. One bolt protects the last 20' to the anchors.
When this route was originally climbed there was a 20' runout to the anchor from the then last(9th) bolt to the anchor which could be protected by gear. However, the rock in this area has deteriorated a bit and Erika Nelson-Wong asked the FA team if a bolt could be added to this section. It sounded like a good idea to keep this route safe. Erika and her husband Jim added the bolt on 10/02/22. Thanks!
