Follow existing trails and climb using removable protection or in climbing areas with existing approved fixed anchors or bolts. Development of any new rock climbing, bouldering or rappelling areas and development of any climbing routes involving the permanent installation of new fixed anchors or new trail construction requires prior Forest Service authorization.
Description
One of the taller cliffs in the area, packed with classics of varying difficulty. Military Wall is probably most well known for it's giant pockets, aesthetic patterned rock, and iron rich limonitic bands.
Whether you're a beginner looking for moderates, or just looking for some warm up routes you'll enjoy Possum Lips, Sunshine, and Moonbeam. These routes tend to be vertical or slightly overhanging and well featured.
Those looking for overhanging classics will enjoy the likes of Tissue Tiger, Gung Ho, Nagypapa, Fuzzy Undercling offering pumpy climbing on giant pockets, full of pinches, sidepulls, and knee bars. The starts on some of these routes are some of the more polished in RRG, so expect these parts to feel a bit hard.
Stays in the sun until 2ish, most of the routes over 5.10 stay very dry in the rain, though you might expect some condensation after hard rains.
Getting There
From Slade, KY (Miguel's): Highway 15 west, 1 mi. Take right onto hwy 77 driving past some seriously bad looking real estate. Continue on 77 through Nada Tunnel and down the other side and some crazy switchbacks. When the hill ends you'll see a parking lot on your left. This is the Martin's Fork trailhead parking lot. From here, hike 100' back up the road and cross to locate the trail. Take the first right for Military Wall or continue along the trail and make a left for Left Flank. Continue for 5-10min then round a corner and you'll have Sunshine and Moonbeam on your right and Tissue Tiger, Fuzzy Undercling, etc ahead of you on the overhanging intimidating wall.
Closed Routes/Archaeological Sites
For nearly 12000 years, the rock overhangs and shelters in the area were used or inhabited by Native peoples. Military Wall is no exception, an archaeological dig was conducted at the base of several of the routes at Military Wall, in which historically significant artifacts were found. The Forest Service has fenced off these sensitive areas. Any climbs located within the fenced off areas should be consider closed and are not open to climbing.
