Grand Giraffe
Sep 21, 2024 · 3 pitches. Lead / Fell/Hung. Second time on this route, first time taking the ramp approach to the Ruper ledge. We roped up for it and a 70 m was about 10 feet to short to reach the top of the ledge. I figured out the beta for the crux offwidth! Left side in, chicken winging when you can, arm bars when you can’t. Start with your left foot on the “slopey ramp” inside the crack, and slowly bump your right foot higher on the series of low right feet. After your left side (foot and arm) feels secure, bring the right foot up high to stem. Then inch your left arm and foot up until you can press down on the bulge. At one point I backstepped with my right foot to gain a bit of upward progress, but then moved it back to the original stemming foot (or maybe a slightly higher one). After you get to this point, it is just “regular offwidth” for a few moves until you are standing above the bulge and can reach the ledgy face hold on the left wall. Just before you can reach the ledgy face hold, there is a sharp crimp for your left hand inside the crack, which helps with pulling over the bulge. For the rest of the route, there arw a few “offwidthy” moves, but there is also a bunch of stemming. When exiting the crack higher up to move onto the face, the hands feel almost nonexistent, but there is a huge right foot high and to the right that you can rock over onto, using the bad hands.
