● Snake Dike
Oct 12, 2024 · 8 pitches. Lead / Onsight. Brad, Rick, Taiga, Kai. 5:30am Saturday Oct 12, 2024 wake up, pour coffee, eat breakfast, load food from Bear box into pack. 5:45am get in car to glacier point. 6:45am get dropped off at Glacier Point and begin hiking 8 miles to the base of the Snake Dike climb. Starting on the beautiful Panorama Trail to the John Muir Trail, then to the Snake Dike Approach. 1:30pm we got to the base of the climb after battling a climber's tough approach. After a quick lunch, we prep for the climb. 2:00pm On Belay. We start the first of 8 pitches on Snake Dike. ~6:24pm Sun goes down, we are just reaching pitch 4. 7:34pm pitch 5, I took a picture of the comet known as C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS over El Capitan. 9:30pm we flash our flashlights down to the our families upper pines camp ground and they flash back. ~10pm we make it to the top of pitch 8 even though I made it a 9th pitch in the dark. We set up on a 4 person short rope to complete the 1000ft mostly unprotected scramble to the summit. 11:06pm we top out 11:21pm we find the cables and begin our decent 11:51pm we get down from the cables on to solid ground. We begin the trek almost 9 miles back to camp. 3:01am surprise rendezvous with Mike and Kevin. They brought energy and home baked goods; and they literally helped lighten the load. 7:00am we make it to Kevin's car 7:05am we make it back to camp as say hello to our relieved loved ones 7:30am Sunday morning: asleep.
