Description
Mount Forist is the big slab you see behind downtown Berlin. It has 25 or so established routes. Most require some gear but have bolts where you need them. Even on some of the fully bolted routes the spacing of the bolts preclude them being called “ sport” climbs. About a quarter of the routes are “sport bolted”.
[NOTE: An excellent little pamphlet/guide has been published by Matt Bowman and is available at the climbing shops in the North Conway area, at the White Mtn Cafe in Gorham, or by contacting Matt at matt@whitemountaincafe.com R.Hall NH Admin.]
Getting There
From the south take Rt 16 into Berlin. About 1/4 mile after Rt16 splits and becomes a ONE WAY sttreet (North-bound) look for a bear left which is a poorly marked Rt 110. [This left is where the Rt 16 sign shows a bear-to-the-right to get to Errol.] Take Rt 110 0.4 mile to a left onto 3rd Ave. [There's a "Berlin Springs" sign & arrow at the turn.] Madigan St is your 2nd right (but the first right is, like, 50ft after you turned off Rt 110).
Take Madigan St till its end and the approach trail starts behind the boulder (photo) by the last house. You will reach the cliff and the climb Madigan (5.6) after a couple of minutes.
Please obey parking signs. Thanks!
