Description

Ophir contains multiple areas. This is a shell to help organize this.

Note, this layer of organization was submitted to help with the way the database is structured during a restructuring of the database a while back. There's a bit of history in going from a school project to the MP.com of today. Now, you have to have similarly structured objects at the same level of organization, otherwise the restructuring doesn't work well

In particular, the better known crags here are Ophir Wall and Cracked Canyon. The Ophir Wall, tucked in a pretty nook, offers nearly a hundred routes on granitic rock up to 600 feet long and difficulties from 5.7 to 5.14c using both gear and bolts for protection. Cracked Canyon has 50ish routes in the 5.4 to 5.11+ range of difficulty in an amazing setting for climbing rock or ice. There are other smaller crags in the area that are not listed here.

So, any one who wants to take on this section (along with any other sections that are similarly not fleshed in) can contact me/us and I/we can reassign it to you to help fill it in! Thanks!

Getting There

Ophir is near Telluride & Ouray. Go South from Telluride on CO Hwy 145 and then East on Ophir Road.

Ophir is South of Telluride and past Mountain Village and not on the way to Ouray. Go South from Telluride on CO Hwy 145 and then East on Ophir Road. You can't miss seeing the big rock face towering above you. Sep 4, 2013

Why isn't the Darkside on here? If the locals don't want it posted okay, but if there is no objection then I'll put it up. Sound off. Jun 25, 2012

Rob -- Leo Paik, an MP.com administrator, added Ophir as part of the reorganization of Colorado by geographical area several years ago. This was done to improve the organization of the Colorado route database, not to "score points." I'm sure that Leo would have provided better info if he were more familiar with the Ophir area.

If you have better info for Ophir, please add it as a comment, or contact Leo to have it incorporated into the area description. Apr 12, 2009

If people are going to add an entire area to the database, I wish they would offer up more info. Seems like some just jump at the chance to add an area so they score MP points. Apr 12, 2009
