Description

Calico Basin has a wide variety of short routes. There is a mixture of trad and sport climbs. Calico Basin is a residential area, so climbers should be careful to avoid disturbing the people who live there. At the time of this writing (2005) there is a good deal of construction going on here, so be prepared to be adaptable as regards parking areas and approach walks.
RAIN AND WET ROCK The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Details

Getting There

Drive west on Charleston. About 2 miles before you get to the main scenic loop road, there is a turnoff to the right for Calico Basin. It is clearly marked. Please obey all parking signs. Fines for illegal parking are a hefty $275!

Found a woman's north face back pack on the side of the road between the two parking areas after dark around 8pm. If it's your's please name a few things from the inside.
Thanks! Nov 23, 2017

There are no longer signs there, so people are parking there now with no issues. Mar 16, 2017

So do the parking signs for Calico Basin explicitly state the specific hours that parking is allowed? Or is it officially prohibited, but they'll let you get away with it as long as you leave by sundown? Nov 16, 2016

Parked in the parking area that is between red springs area and kraft area, April 2016. We did not get a parking ticket. However, I can see how some people get tickets. There are parking signs which designate where you can and cannot park. When the road dead ends making a 90 degree right turn (which heads towards Kraft mountain parking) look along the 2 wire fence, a sign with arrow designates where you can begin to park, ending at another sign further down the road (going towards Kraft mountain parking) where you can no longer park beyond that point. Park within the arrows and you will NOT get a ticket.

Our car was gone by sundown, so I don't know if you may get a ticket at night, I am assuming it is best to get to the car in Calico Basin by at least the same time designated by BLM for the parking within scenic loop drive (see main RR page for seasonal BLM parking times). Apr 10, 2016

Yes, the BLM was out giving tickets this past Saturday. Rationale is that those parking at the corner were often creating a bit of a cluster so that traffic couldn't go through and also that it impeded SAR, per the BLM ranger.

You can park nearby still and it is a negligible increase to the walk to the crags. Not a huge deal, but be mindful that they aren't playing. Mar 29, 2016

Word on the street is that cars are being ticketed for parking in this area as of March 2016. Please contact the Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition if you have any questions or want to help work toward re-opening this area to parking. Mar 29, 2016
