HUMAN WASTE: Human waste is a major issue plaguing the area. The Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition (SNCC) works to provide "wag bags" free of charge in several locations: Black Velvet Canyon, The Hamlet, Kraft Mountain Area, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor. These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out. Consider bringing one to be part of your daily kit no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly. Do not throw them in the toilets at the parking areas.
See https://www.southernnevadaclimbers.org/wag-bags for more information on the program.
Description
This is the pass west of the Red Springs parking lot which connects Calico Basin to the second pullout crags. This sub-area contains crags east of the summit, while the crags west of the summit are usually accessed via the scenic loop road and are listed under Guardian Angel West. The pass is named for an angel carved on a boulder on the west side of the pass.
Getting There
There are three parking options to reach the first crags in the pass (Cowlick Crag and Dickies Cliff). All options require 10 to 15 minutes of hiking on easy terrain to reach the first cliffs, with a slightly longer and more difficult approach to continue up the hill to the other crags deeper in the pass.
- The rocky roadside near the corner of Assisi Canyon Dr and Sandstone Dr. Take a wide trail heading west directly towards the pass. 0.5 miles and 160 feet of elevation gain.
- Kraft Mountain Parking Lot (far end). Take the gravel road heading west, then a left on the Girl Scout Trail just before reaching the sandstone, then a right into the pass. 0.7 miles and 100 feet elevation gain.
- Red Spring Parking Lot. Take obvious trails heading west out of the parking lot directly towards the pass. 0.7 miles and 180 feet of elevation gain.
