HUMAN WASTE Human waste is one of the major issues plaguing Red Rocks. The Las Vegas Climbers Liaison Council and the AAC provides free "wag bags" in several locations (Black Velvet, First Pullout, Kraft Mtn/Bouldering, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor). These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out - consider bringing one to be part of your kit (just like your rope and shoes and lunch) no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly (do not throw them in the toilets at the parking area).
Description
Named after the quarry adjacent to the parking lot that was briefly operated from 1905 to 1912, this area is now better known as a popular hiking and climbing destination. This area has the highest concentration of 5.12 to 5.14 sport climbs in Red Rock, though there are plenty of easier climbs as well.
There is more parking than (04) Second Pullout (Calico II) but less than (03) First Pullout (Calico I). On busy days, the lot will fill up and the gate at the front of the lot may even be closed. Do not block the flow of traffic while waiting for a spot - either loop through or move on.
Getting There
Park at the Sandstone Quarry parking lot, a little way past the second pullout, about two and a half miles along the loop road.
If the lot is full or the gate is closed, it is possible to park at the next pullout, the High Point Overlook, and walk back along the road until meeting up with the Grand Circle Loop trail and continuing along this trail to the quarry. This adds an extra mile on relatively mild terrain to the approach.
