Access Issue: IMPORTANT notes on Wet Rock and Human Waste Details

WET ROCK: The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN RED ROCKS DURING OR AFTER RAIN. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery bone-dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby.

HUMAN WASTE: Human waste is a major issue plaguing the area. The Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition (SNCC) works to provide "wag bags" free of charge in several locations: Black Velvet Canyon, The Hamlet, Kraft Mountain Area, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor. These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out. Consider bringing one to be part of your daily kit no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly. Do not throw them in the toilets at the parking areas.

Description

This impressive cliff-band contains high quality, one-pitch climbs which are mostly bolted and relatively long by Calico Hills standards. There is mostly face climbing on angles ranging from slightly under vert to very gentle overhangs.

The wall is almost always in the sun, with the exception of early spring mornings, and the last half hour when the sun dips behind the mountains.

Getting There

Head out on the main trail at the southeast corner of the parking lot. Pass by (but don't go down to) The Pier. Shortly afterward the trail will split, with one branch heading straight downhill on the left. Take this left heading downhill to reach a low, vegetated wash. Continue on the trail in the wash until it peters out at a slab on the left. Hike up the slab to a slot, pull a 4th class move or two to overcome the slot, and then continue up along slabs to the base of the walls, generally heading right (east) to reach the majority of the climbs. See the approach map or photos for a visual reference. ~15 minutes if done correctly.

The wall can also be reached from the 2nd pullout by scrambling up to Stratocaster Area and continuing northwest, but this would be a much more lengthy and difficult approach. Most prefer to approach Stratocaster Area by walking past this wall instead.
