Access Issue: IMPORTANT notes on Wet Rock and Human Waste Details

WET ROCK: The sandstone in Red Rocks is fragile and is very easily damaged when it is wet. Holds rip off and climbs have been and will continue to be permanently damaged due to climbers not respecting this phenomenon. After a heavy storm the rock will remain wet, sometimes for several days. PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB IN RED ROCKS DURING OR AFTER RAIN. A good rule of thumb is that if the ground near your climb is at all damp (and not powdery bone-dry sand), then do not climb. There are many alternatives (limestone, granite, basalt, and plastic) nearby.

HUMAN WASTE: Human waste is a major issue plaguing the area. The Southern Nevada Climbers Coalition (SNCC) works to provide "wag bags" free of charge in several locations: Black Velvet Canyon, The Hamlet, Kraft Mountain Area, The Gallery, and The Black Corridor. These bags are designed so that you can pack your waste out. Consider bringing one to be part of your daily kit no matter where you go. Once used, please dispose of them properly. Do not throw them in the toilets at the parking areas.

Description

Steep routes on white rock make this small amphitheater a steep sport climber's dream. The wall is generally sunny until the late afternoon, but the gulley acts as a wind tunnel making this one of the windier spots. Some of the wall gets shaded earlier in the afternoon due despite the belay/hang area remaining sunny due to the cliff angles. This can make the wall feel a bit warmer than a fully shaded sector.

Getting There

Approach on the Turtlehead Peak trail as for The Twinkie. Leave the trail to head up a slab on the left side of that crag, continuing on a climber's trail into the bushy gully. Avoid getting off the trail as this is a rare, lush area for the park with sensitive plant species. The trail winds through the brush past Avian Wall before a brief scramble up a slab to the base of the climbs.

0.7 mi with 350 ft of elevation gain, ~20 minutes.

It is also possible to approach from the right side of the crag from the left end of Secret 13 Wall. The crags are only a few minutes apart, but they usually have differing conditions that can make for a challenging same-day combination.
