Access Issue: Access via Garland Prairie Closed- Use Woody Mountain Road Details

9/24/2025 There is a road dispute happening on the standard Garland Prairie route to the canyon. NAZCC is working with the Forest Service to resolve it. Until then, you’ll need to take the long way around Via Woody Mountain Road. The beta for Woody Mountain Road is in the Getting There section below.

Description

The West End Wall is an intriguing spread of tall, morphed columns and stunning geologic architecture. Over the last number of years this wall has delivered long, striking lines which have created a full value venue. This wall is stained with dramatic black water streaks interfolded with otherworldly swaths of vibrant yellow lichen.

If you are looking to climb a lot of hard routes in a day, this would be on the short list of sectors which dish out some of the most classic climbing in the canyon. There is a very conspicuous low spot drainage on the rim which marks the top of Nyctophiliac and Like a Shadow in the Night. They top out at the bottom of the bowl.

This northwest facing wall gets morning shade until midday during the summer months and increased shade during the Fall season. 65 to 70 degree ambient temps will seem perfect.

Hike west along canyon rim To the far west end.
