Description
These are the walls closest to town, essentially in front view when driving across the bridge and past the general store. The rock is similar to that at the Lower Town Wall, but the area has more moderates.
The crags here have some of the best cracks at Index. This area also has lots of corners, steep face, low angle slabs, and aretes. Lots of aretes, plus numerous places for walk-up toproping. Approaches vary somewhat, but all will involve at least 20-min of hiking.
Plenty of forest, and thus shade on a sunny day. The top of Lookout Point, as well as Lookout Jr, is an excellent picnic spot with views to Gunn, Baring, Index, and Persis as well as to the town below.
Getting There
Parking: Most folks now park along Crescent St, just below the RR tracks. As this is in a residential area, please be quiet and respectful. You might also find parking in town near Dolittle Park. If you don't find parking at those places, try the Heybrook Ridge lot, just over the bridge. One can also walk from the Lower Town Wall parking areas, along the tracks from the opposite direction as that described below. (But definitely don't park right past the railroad crossing on the main road, as folks driving over the crossing might not see you. Folks in town have complained when people parked here.)
Trail: Hike down the railroad tracks from town, heading towards the Upper Town Walls. About 200 yards down, on the right and in the middle of the curve, take the obvious footbridge on the right. Hike up the trail. At the first crest, go right (left goes to Zelda boulders), and soon reach Midnite boulder. Just before this boulder is a trail going off right that goes directly to Hag Crag. This is also the best way to reach routes on Lookout Point's & Private Idaho's right (east) side, Planet Index, Halloween, and eventually Zappa.
If you instead stay left past Midnite boulder, continue up the trail until reaching the old "T" junction. GO LEFT. (Folks used to go right for LOP and other walls, but now everyone should go left.) See the yellow line below.
For all walls except Rattletale, look for the trail cutting right about 100 paces past the old "T" junction. The topo above shows roughly how to reach these walls. Below is a blowup of the main turnoffs.
To get to the top of Lookout Point, take one of the trails to the right side of either Private Idaho or Lookout Point, then follow the steep trail up the gully.
