Description
Some of the most classic and famous climbs are found on the Tre Cime (Drei Zinnen).
The Mega-Classics include the Preuss-Riss on Cima Piccolissima, (Preuss,1911), The Gelbe Kante on Cima Piccola(Comici), The Comici and the Hasse-Brandler(Hasse,Brandler,Löw,Siegrist 1958) on the North-Face of Cima Grande, the Cassin and the Schweizerweg(Weber,Schelbert 1959) on Cima Ovest. The Comici is arguably the most famous climb in the dolomites. The routes are crowded all summer during good weather.
The rock quality is basically poor but good on the classics, because the loose holds disappear. Mostly crimps.
Get an early start to avoid crowds on the Comici.
The North-Face of Cima Ovest is home to two of the hardest routes in the Alps, namely Panaroma (14b) and Bellavista (14b) which both follow incredbly steep and spectacular lines. These amazing routes were first ascended and free climbed by Alexander Huber.
There are also some nice boltprotected climbs by C. Hainz.(phantom der Zinne(13a), Oetzi trifft Yeti(12b)...)Take some gear. Better wait for warmer weather with no thunderstorms, for ideal conditions.
If it's too cold for the North Faces you can climb the Yellow edge or Oetzi trifft Yeti(noon-evening sun) on Cima Piccola)
Getting There
Per David Kozak: Accessing Tre Cime has become ridiculously expensive and very inconvenient. The zone is being loved to death! From Cortina drive to Misurina (20 minutes northeast of Cortina). Just north of Misurina, turn right and follow signs up the small road north east into the Tre Cime area until you reach the zone near a campground and just below the toll booth. At this point there are three options: 1. It now costs approximately $100 to park at Auronzo for a 24 hour period. Yes, you heard me correctly. There is a website where you can reserve your entry time. It is a nightmare. Good luck and plan ahead. If you want to spend this kind of money and have reserved an entry time, drive the 5 KM to the parking lot. 2. Park just below the toll booth and hike up the well marked path (#101 signed about 30 meters down from the parking) for 1-2 hours to Rifugio Auronzo saving the $100 for a snack at the rifugio at the end of the day but adding a lot of hiking to the days start and end. The young person's option. 3. Arrive just below the toll booth zone where there is a large parking lot. Arrive early. Park your car, purchase a parking pass, and then get in line to ride the bus that goes to the rifugio. In 2025, the first bus heads up at 8am. You can purchase a bus ticket at a kiosk or as you hop on board. Pro tip: If you are early and lucky enough you can park in a spot on the right about 100 meter up the road from the round about near the parking area. There is room for about five vehicles. It's free and it's legal to park there overnight. I parked there for three nights.
It might be that getting up to the Auronzo zone is the crux of your climbing trip to the amazing Tre Cime climbing. It's more harrowing than its loose rock!
