Description

Small country with tons of rock. It's almost a crime to have as much rock as this country has. Spring and Fall are the best times to come, depending on the area, but be careful because it rains the most during these two seasons. With that said, it's Spain and it doesn't rain that much. Winter is great for Andalusia, Catalonia, Costa Blanca and the Central Zone (Madrid), but just expect short days and cold temperatures. During summer it's best to climb in the Pyrennes or in Asturias in the Picos de Europa where you have higher altitudes and lower temperatures. Or find someplace like Rodellar where the climbs are in the shade.

There are several things to remember when on a climbing trip to Spain. Grocery stores, as well as every store, are closed from 2 to 5 so you can't buy anything. Bars are always open. Grocery stores usually won't be open on Saturdays in small towns, but in the bigger towns the larger chain stores will be open. All stores are closed on national holidays...and there are a lot of national holidays. So look at the calendar because it's possible that stores can be closed up to four days in a row depending on the holiday. Grocery stores don't sell aspirin or any type of over the counter medication. You have to go to a pharmacy. If possible, try to shop in the markets in the towns versus larger stores. Prices are cheaper, people are nicer and the food is much better.

Hi there,
I recently spent about a week climbing in Tenerife. It was wonderful. Im now back home and was hoping to put some of the routes I did up on MP. I dont seem to be able to: there is no mention of Las Canadas, or Guaria as areas on the webpage. I would love to be given instructions on how to add the names of routes to your list at Arico. Also, just a technical thing, the correct name for the island of Tenerife, whether you're from mainland Spain or from the Canary Islands, or from Tenerife itself, is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, not Islas de Tenerife. Hope this helps the page.

Hey everyone,

We're traveling around the world making a documentary web series on healthy living in different cultures. We wanted to do an episode in Spain on a rockstar female rock climber. Any ideas or suggestions? Anything is helpful!

I have been looking all over the internet but it seems that from the USA the only place to purchase spanish guidebooks is through climb-europe.com. Does anyone know of any other vendors? Jan 24, 2014

Planning a bouldering trip to Albarracin in December 2013. Wanted to see if anyone had any information on the location and possible bouldering en route from Madrid. Also, if anyone has been there and is planning to be around the area during the same time, i would love to meet up and get a little insight on the place! Thanks! Mar 12, 2013

A couple of updates to the description page (and a little bit more):

Driving speed is controlled by radar, and there are signs to tell you where *most of the radar stations are.. even with a rental car you will receive your speeding tickets in the mail when you return home. you have been warned :)

  • IMPORTANT* please bring wag bags and carry out your trash (and more if you can). There is a lot of trash and human feces at most climbing areas, and there is never a public restroom. Although, there is almost always a complete set of dumpsters and recycling containers close by.

camping: there is no free camping in spain. sounds weird to americans, but it is the truth. However, you can sleep in a van pretty much wherever you go, take caution not to block the entrance to somebody's orchard and you should be fine. There are refugios at most climbing areas, but (IMHO) it is better to rent a van for the length of your stay. That's not to say that your shouldn't frequent the refugios, as they are usually run by climbers and full of nice like-minded people.

I plan on being in El Chorro November 19-26......climbing Nov 20-25 and my partner bailed.

Anyone needing a partner those dates or group going that I can join? I will bring either a 60m or 70m rope (undecided what to bring), bunch of draws, slings, beaners, etc.

I am recovering this season from finger injuries and will get on lead up to 10a-10c depending on style and follow up to 11ish.

Any one need a partner or group going I can join?

Also, any recommendations on where to stay? There are so many options, I want to be close to climbing, and will likely rent a car from Malaga. Oct 30, 2011

I am going to be in Spain in January and was considering going to El Chorro for a week. I am looking for any beta I can get about a trip there. How is the climbing? Where have people flown in to, and is it easy to get to the climbing area by bus? Any recommendations on cheap places to stay (or camp) near the crags so you don't have to rent a car? Is it easy to find partners? (or is anybody else going to be there mid-late Jan?) Nov 19, 2010

Keep in mind when planning a trip to Spain, that the national holiday usually runs from about mid August to mid September. This is a pretty tough time to be there as everyone is out and many places are very busy, to the point of not being able to find a place to stay and other businesses being completely closed.

Another thing to remember is that most places close during the middle of the day, they open from about 9am to 1 or 2pm then close and re-open around 5pm and stay open till 8 or 9pm. This is also a good thing to remember when trying to call to make any reservations and such. Oct 30, 2009

Andalucia is a massive province that runs down the eastern side of southern Spain and it has loads of great climbing.

The most well known area is El Chorro and this is well documented in the latest Rockfax guide. This guide also covers some really good outlying areas such as Desplomilandia, Loja and Archidona.

There is also a Spanish guide (with English translations) to the area by David Munilla.

I have also tried to develop a rock climbing guide to the central area around Villanueva del Rosario that includes the Chilam Balam cave.

I live in the area and don't hesitate to contact me if you need more information

You can find information about spain (a little outdated) here
onaclimb.com/resseinform/in…
and about Montserrat (Catalunya) in the same web
onaclimb.com/montse/index.htm
Also there are very active blogs about recent climbs (mostly familiar kind) in
blogticulos.blogspot.com/
(there has been a surge lately for bouldering -look for Albarracin in Teruel...)
and shouldn't miss los Mallos de Riglos ( a0avista.blogspot.com/)
or la Pedriza in Madrid....

If anyone happens to know of some sport climbing or bouldering areas near Barcelona or Seville, please make a post. I'm traveling there from late August to December and I don't think I can part with climbing for that long; however, I have no idea what's out there. I would appreciate the help! Mar 31, 2009

It will be great to see this part of the site get filled. I have never gone climbing there but I can concur that the country is full of climbable rock, at least where I have been. This country should be a climbing Mecca. Madrid and Andalusia start hitting the mid 90s in May so they are probably incredible winter destinations. Hopefully I will be posting some routes from there some day. Aug 6, 2008
