Description
High quality moderates and super hard problems are abundant in the woods.
Things that aren't abundant in the woods: Crowds...
You'll know that you have made it when you cross a small stone wall and see the trail split left and right. To your left will be the Hero Block, straight ahead/right leads to many problems but at the end is the warm-up area, the scoop area and General Lee V2. If go straight and then take a right you'll be on your way down to the Swirley Boulder area.
Farthest away from the entrance you'll find the Warm-up Boulders, a collection of boulders with 6 or so V0ish problems and a few V2s and even a few V6s. Most climbers start their day here, and then go their separate ways around the circle trail that goes through the woods and passes the majority of the boulders.
A Bot of History
The development of Blair happened in 2000, and in a recent email with one of the developers Janet wrote out a really good story about her experiences.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!!!
"Rio Rose showed up in New Hampshire from coastal California via The Red and signed onto the lease of our Dover apartment while we were undergrads at UNH in 2000. A climber migrant with wavy locks of hair, tanned skin and an infectious laugh, Rio was one of those people who could not go a day without an adventure. One late autumn evening, he returned from a solo mountain bike exploration raving in his characteristic crackling lilting voice about a bunch of unclimbed boulders he found at Pawtuckaway. A few days later we parked at the Fundy Cove boat launch, ducked into the forest and wandered in different directions, excitedly bushwhacking from one boulder to another, all losing each other in the process. Blair Woods, named after the recent hit scary movie The Blair Witch Project, received its name that afternoon.
The moniker was only half in jest, since at least a few of us were spooked by the seclusion and disorientation we'd experienced. The house-sized marbled boulder, steep on all sides, down in a cold, wet hollow, was clearly the gem of the lot - known now as the Swirly Boulder. The others, all scattered within a few acres of each other, would soon come together in a perfect circuit of easy and moderate problems, minutes from the parking lot. Under Rio's easy going and fun-loving tutelage, we built trails, scrubbed lichen, cleaned up landings and climbed our hearts out, with no concept that the boulders would still draw climbers more than 15 years later”
