Peregrine falcons select nest sites on cliffs in the Upper Skagit Valley, including the Climbing Management Areas of Newhalem West (Ryan’s Wall) and Newhalem East. As required in the NPS Superintendent’s Compendium, these areas will be closed to all public from March 1st to July 15th of each year, or until the young falcons have fledged or NPS staff have determined that nesting will not occur on a specific wall during this period. Access Fund, Washington Climbers Coalition and NPS partner on a volunteer raptor monitoring program to determine nesting activity. Description
The rock is a gneiss (metamorphosed granitic rock) that is both solid and beautiful, offering quality aesthetic lines of 5.9 through 5.13 in difficulty. The crag faces west and south, tucked into the bottom of a wooded, steep valley, just north of the highway.
Getting There
Coming from the west, pass through town to the electrical substation at the end of town and on the right. Park here, and walk for a few minutes up the road, heading further out of town. The crag is just off the road, on the north (left) side.
History
The area's first routes were put up by Andrew Sell and David Speyer, who also made the original trail and called the area just "Newhalem". This page was put up by Ryan Triplett in 2008 shortly before his tragic accident. Soon after his death, his friends renamed the crag after him. See the comments below for more info.
