Description [Suggest Change]
The Willow Hole Area is one of the more remote climbing spots in all of Joshua Tree and as such it is very likely to see many climbers due to the lengthy approach and rough terrain. Those who visit will experience a collection of superb routes in a wilderness setting. Keep in mind that this is a day-use only area to protect the wildlife that frequent the area, especially around the Willow Hole proper, so hike faster and bring a headlamp!
Getting There [Suggest Change]
Standard North Wonderland approach past The Middle Kingdom and continue on until an old road is visible to the right (southeast) - this is about 100 meters before the Atom Smasher Area. Hike along the road as it turns into a wash for a ways until the Grey Giant comes into view. Continue on as the wash you are in makes a turn to the east (you will pass a huge boulder in the wash) and continue following the circuitous wash as it then makes another turn to the south and then back again to the north and finally east again where you will see the trees of Willow Hole proper. Pass along the southern edge of WH and pick up a trail on the east end of Willow Hole where a trail leads up over a rocky notch and the various formations in the area. Plan on 1 - 1.5 hours of hiking from the car if all goes well.
