The Schreckhorn
(With thoughts of Leslie Stephen)

Aloof, as if a thing of mood and whim;
Now that its spare and desolate figure gleams
Upon my nearing vision, less it seems
A looming Alp-height than a guise of him
Who scaled its horn with ventured life and limb,
Drawn on by vague imaginings, maybe,
Of semblance to his personality
In its quaint glooms, keen lights, and rugged trim.

At his last change, when Life's dull coils unwind,
Will he, in old love, hitherward escape,
And the eternal essence of his mind
Enter this silent adamantine shape,
And his low voicing haunt its slipping snows
When dawn that calls the climber dyes them rose?

Thomas Hardy -1897

First Pitch
Feb 1, 2026 · Follow. Actually a great little climb. Really enjoyed it on toprope. Confidence inspiring. First half is a series of moves repeating one sequence a few times. Above that your orientation changes and the crack widens to good big hands from pretty secure fingers. This is a straight in crack that is complicated by placing a lot of gear and getting the rope in the way of your feet. Ismael's lead.

Captain Hook
Feb 1, 2026 · Follow. Great climb! Crux right off the ground with some insecure moves in a flaring gully. Up high things get a little easier, with the crocodile head moves being the highlight of the route, probably. I tried to get fancy on toprope and managed to fall in the middle of the sequence getting around the crocodile, trying to lieback the left side. Lazy. Second pitch is no gimme. Starting moves on this 5.6 pitch are in the mid 5.8s. Incredible to imagine the stallions who put this up in an era when this was considered 5.7 and 5.6. I don't think they were sandbagging. They were just really in tune with this kind of climbing. With Ismael.

Jan 18, 2026 · TR. With Ismael. No recollection of having done this before. Haha. Not only fell, but hung forever at the high crux. Lower half of the route seems burly but the holds are huge.
