BETA PHOTO: East Colfax, next to Tunnel 6.

Seasonal Raptor Closures MORE INFO >>>

East Colfax is located on the west side of Tunnel 6. It is by the tyrolean to get across the river by The Armory; however, you do not cross the river. The cliff gets its name because like East Colfax, it's a little rough but really not that bad and has a lot to offer.

Eds. there are raspberries growing in the area.

Getting There

Park past Tunnel 6, walk towards the tunnel on the river side. Walk past the tyrol, and East Colfax is on your right. It is about a 100 foot wall.

Eds. this is opposite from The Armory on the north side of the road. You don't cross the river to get to this crag. The approach time is ~5 minutes.

The slope up to the upper right climbs has been improved, but it still is a hazard for those below. Note, some kid groups gather to climb the slabby routes at the base of this gully!

What a great area for beginning leaders. Well bolted moderate routes. A little off the highway, so it is not so noisy.

There appear to be about five more bolted routes to the right up that gully - any beta? Ran up a couple, mostly one-move wonders.

Cool spot with a super easy approach and some decent routes. The few times that I've been, there were a lot of people there! The upper right area still has a lot of loose, toaster-sized rocks just waiting to get kicked down into the crowds below. Be careful.

I dropped my Black Diamond Positron screwgate on March 6 over near the bottom of the gully near Wild Bore.

It was a beautiful Sunday, so the area was very busy with nearly every route being worked on. When I realized I had dropped it, I asked the group next to me, and they said someone picked it up, asked if it was theirs, they responded that it wasn't, and that person left with it.

My mistake for dropping it, but (probably directed at new climbers, which appear to be very common at this area) on a very crowded day, don't go around picking up random gear and assuming it doesn't belong to anyone. If you're the type of person on the prowl for lost gear, go at the end of the day after everyone has left, not while people are distracted with their activities climbing and belaying and whatnot.

I'll surely take it back if that person who found it is kind enough.

Great place for beginner sport leads and into some moderates. Plus, one 5.4 beginner trad lead. I can't speak to the routes above 5.9. There's even a two bolt practice anchor just left of the start on For the Children to practice setting up and cleaning sport anchors. Went there with my partner and her 10 year old son today. We all had a blast. Big thanks to those who developed this crag.
