Access Issue: Current San Diego County Advisories Details

Description

"El Cajon Wall is located in East San Diego County. It has been the subject of much joy and pain for many local climbers. Nevertheless, recent development of the area has produced a number of phenomenal routes. The area is primarily a sport climbing destination, but hiking out with a few cams won't disappoint the discerning trad climber." Marc Kajut, Feb. 2006

The Wedge, as it was originally called, is also known as El Cajon Wall, or the Main Wall.

Getting There

Hwy 67 or Interstate 8 to Lakeside, California. Lake Jennings Rd. to El Monte Rd. Take this about 5 miles to the gate of El Capitan Reservoir. Turn around and Park near the "Road Ends in 1000 feet" sign. Do not leave valuables in your car.

Cross the San Diego River on the semi-permanent, wood plank foot bridge. Follow this trail north to the dirt road. As you emerge off the trail onto the dirt road turn left (west) and you'll see the faded Forest Service Bird of Prey sign.  Immediately north of the raptor sign, a climbers foot trail leaves the road heading north to the Wedge. If you do not find the Forest Service Bird of Prey sign, back track until you do. The other unmarked trail 100 yards further west along the dirt road leads to the Mountaineers Walls and will not get you to The Wedge.
