Access Issue: Land Owned by Muir Valley Nature Preserve
Details
The valley is home to more than 30 separate climbing walls, all open to climbers at no charge, a $15 fee is charged per car for parking to offset maintenance costs.
Some important rules must be followed to ensure future access and enjoyment by all. A complete list can be found at muirvalley.org/tabs/#pills-1 , but the most important are listed below:
- All climbers must fill out a legal release form before climbing. muirvalley.org/waiver/ ;
- The parking lot described in the directions below is the only permitted parking. Do not park on private drives.
- No dogs are allowed in Muir Valley (nor left in your car in the parking lot.)
- No hammocks are allowed to be hung/used in Muir Valley.
Description
Sister crag to the Hideout, the Great Wall has a good assortment routes for beginners to experts. The lines tend to be shorter than at the Hideout but rock quality is excellent. There's a good day's worth of climbing between the two walls.
Getting There
From the parking lot take the North trail, making a left to follow the gravel valley floor road. Stay right at a fork in the road and cross a bridge. Pass the trailheads for Animal Crackers and The Hideout then be on the lookout for a sign for the great wall near a stone pit toilet. The trail that leads to the Great wall will be on your right.
If you're already at the Hideout, continue left down the trail past International Route of Pancakes for a couple hundred feet until you reach La Escalada, the first route at the Great Wall.
