MountainProject lists MORE subareas if you are not logged in

This is a weird quirk I noticed today, since I haven't logged in for a while. If you go to https://www.mountainproject.com/area/116705492/west-sector and you are NOT logged in, you will see a subarea listing for "The Nest". But, if you ARE logged in, that subarea is not listed (see screenshot below).

Interestingly, the "The Nest" page returns a 404, so it's like it's not actually there: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/126840847/the-nest

Maybe a cacheing discrepancy? Now I don't see The Nest at all, which seems expected as you pointed out that it was deleted. Either way, this is not by design, you should see the same content whether you're logged in or not (with the exception of new content on the website that hasn't made it into the app yet).

Zander, are you referring to my browser's cache? I don't think that's the case as I've cleared my browser cache in between visits and still see the issue.

Here's another instance I've found: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/124643261/h2o-wall lists "Waterboarded by Attitude - Closed Project" if logged OUT but not if logged IN

Weird, that one I am able to replicate. Let me dig around and ask a few folks. Thanks for the examples.

Hi Zander, is there any update on this?

Sounds like a server-side cache issue where links to deleted content take longer to get taken down across the site when you aren't logged in. Not ideal, but also hopefully not a critical issue as the deleted content and any links to it do get removed eventually.

Ok, is there a plan to change this behavior or is it just a "guess we'll just live with it" thing?

Definitely don't want to live with it, but I'd guess it's a lower priority.

Zander, I have found a very similar issue.

It appears that the Name, Grade, Stars, and some other information is missing from this route when logged out (could also be happening for other routes, I just found this one): mountainproject.com/route/1…

[See comparison screenshot below]

If you search Wolfenstein in MP when logged out, you'll end up at the right route page and should see the name and areas. Very strange that it doesn't show when going directly via URL. I'll get a ticket added though likely low priority again as you can see all the info that's missing in the left rail for the route list (name, rating, stars) and the You & This Route section.

Keep these coming! Appreciate the sleuthing.

When logged out, searching for Wolfenstein in MP and going to the search result gives me the exact same result (missing "header"). What URL did you come to that supposedly shows the "right route page"?

I originally got to this page and discovered the issue by clicking through from the sidebar of the parent area: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/106583875/wolfenstein-rock So perhaps the links on that page should be updated instead?

The route listing in the search bar results (but not the route listing on the search results landing page).

Ah, yes that populates the data. But then if I refresh the page, all of that is gone

Here's another weird "visible if logged in, but not if logged out" route: https://www.mountainproject.com/route/124596636/border-patrol (from the parent https://www.mountainproject.com/area/120033183/southern-pillar-west-side )

Looks like Border Patrol is fixed, but the same problem is evident here: https://www.mountainproject.com/area/126999904/blue-ox-wall-sw

Have you seen any more of these? All examples listed seem fixed now. Hoping it was a weird edge case that got resolved.

I haven't checked recently - at the time I was seeing so many of them that I stopped posting in this thread.

I can let you know if I see it again

Since you asked, I looked again and here's a few odd ones:

https://www.mountainproject.com/route/117107404/e-z-path - page only loads when logged in. When not logged in it shows a blank white screen.
https://www.mountainproject.com/area/106033863/middle-tower (same as above)

https://www.mountainproject.com/area/106112610/metro-atlanta-area Lists "North Springs Station" when logged out (but not when logged in) and that page ( mountainproject.com/area/20…) gives a 404

Same with https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105865369/jungle-land and the route "Lioness"
Same with https://www.mountainproject.com/area/110245583/central-basin and "Central Basin Face Area"

Clicking on the "Updates" button to the right of the title for https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105716763/indian-creek gives a 500 error

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
