West Idaho encompasses a diversity of landscapes and rock types. Climbing areas range from the basalt of the Snake River Plain (Black Cliffs, Swan Falls), to the granite of the Idaho batholith (McCall Area, Salmon and Clearwater River Areas), to the limestone of the Columbia River Plateau (Riggins, Hells Canyon).

The local climbing advocacy group is the Boise Climbers Alliance.
