Description

While Riggins is primarily known for its outstanding whitewater there is also some rock climbing to be had in the area.

There are sport climbs in “The Colliseum” of the Seven Devils as well as many alpine first ascents waiting to be done there too, but this page deals only with climbs located up the Salmon River Road.

The hot, steep terrain don’t exactly produce ‘destination climbs’ But if you’re going to be in the area for awhile and you’re hungry enough, here’s some stuff to keep you busy.

Getting There

If driving South out of Riggins, turn Left and drive over the bridge up the Salmon River Road and continue upriver for approx 30 minutes.
Cross the bridge which spans the “lake creek” rapids, which include Hay Stack and The Big Easy.
Continue until the road turns to dirt and you will begin noticing large chicken headed slabs and cracks on a formation on the left side of the road.

Also, if you continue 5 more minutes to the Manning Crevice Bridge (a large metal suspension bridge) you will find a few more climbs.
Either pull over before the bridge on the the right side (river side) of the road or just before the bridge. Walk to the the bridges left side where you’ll notice a nice little paved area with rip-rap down below. Here there are several nice boulder problems and the approach trail to two single pitch trad climbs.

Across the river is a 3-4 pitch aid (possibly free) climb difficult to access by foot. Most practical access is by water around the second week of July.
