Description
As the name suggests, this sector of Rocklands is the highest in elevation. Home to a wide variety of areas, including the ever-popular Roadside, many consider The Pass to be Rocklands proper. When you visit this area for the first time -- setting off down the sand-paved path, the jaw-dropping quantity of rock before you can be a truly humbling experience. And, given that it covers such a large expanse with so many different areas of high quality climbing available, many will find themselves spending a great deal of time at this location.
Getting There
The Pass exists on Cape Nature property and is one of the few locations to have a conveniently placed parking lot at the trail-head. Regardless of which direction you are driving from on the R364, The Pass's parking area is easy to spot, just don't forget to look for it.
As you climb the R364 out of Clanwilliam or de Pakhuys, Travelers Rest, etc. be on the lookout for the point at which your ascent ends. At this point the road will begin to curve considerably and a towering buttress of rock will be visible to one side (which side will depend on where you're coming from, left from Clanwilliam, right from Travelers Rest and de Pakhuys).
For a visual interpretation of these instructions consult the Google Earth map on the lower left of this page.
