Description
The Monolith Area hosts a few of the most classic problems at The Lake, and is a really nice bouldering area with a wide variety of problems and mostly flat landings.
As the East Bluff Trail climbs from the North Shore it ascends a narrow, rocky ridge between the Lake and the Steinke Creek watershed. Just beyond Elephant Rock it reaches the top of the ridge. The Monolith area is named for a huge block that sits prominently at the top of a boulder field, next to a popular overlook. Between Elephant Rock and the Monolith proper, the trail follows the east side of the ridgeline. This is the Monolith Ridge - East, and the bouldering opportunities next to the trail will be obvious. On the Lake side of this ridge is Monolith Ridge - West. Other bouldering is scattered on the Steinke creek side of the trail and at the Monolith overlook.
A partial overview may be found at Monolith Area Map
For those problems next to the hiking trail, please keep your stuff out of the way and try to minimize the chalk you leave behind.
