Description

La Huasteca canyon is a huge canyon with many large 1,000+ foot walls. With a five minute drive from Santa Catarina, it is a popular crag with people from the city. With way more big faces than it's neighbor El Potrero Chico it is curious why there aren't many sport style routes up the big faces. Most the big faces are known for adventure routes. The rock is limestone but usually known to be more slippery then El Potrero Chico.

La Huasteca has nearly 500 bolted routes ranging from 5.7 to 5.14. If you are planning a trip to Potrero Chico you should make time for La Huasteca and El Salto.

Getting There

Take Morones Prieto Ave until you see the sign for La Huasteca and take the exit on the right. Follow the road over a small two lane bridge to a stop sign. Turn left and follow the road to the entrance.

Climate

In the summer it can reach as high as 107°F (42°C) and go below freezing in the winter. The best months to climb are between September and March but you can find climbers in the park all year. Though most likely in the shade.

The climate in La Huasteca is very similar to El Potrero Chico and like the Potrero just because it's raining outside of the park doesn't mean it's raining inside the park. The locals say it never rains in La Huasteca.
