Description
This beautiful and secluded canyon is located 2 km past the Rompepicos Dam (Presa Rompepicos) accessed by driving past the end of the paved road in La Huasteca. Look to your right and you will see it; a colorful, towering, overhung, north-facing wall adorning the curved, narrow depths of this canyon.
There are currently two established routes on these imposing walls, both opened by Alex Catlin and partners:
Karma Bonfire (12+, 11 pitches, 330 m)
Vuelo de Fortuna (13, 10 pitches, 300 m)
Further right, the wall gets very blank at the bottom. Perhaps some multipitch 5.15 routes wait in store for future generations to uncover. Higher up, the wall gets more featured with blobs and tufas.
Reports from local climbers suggest that there is perhaps no north facing rock of the same quality as Vuelo de Fortuna in the entire region.
Getting There
Park in the dry riverbed and hike past a narrow slot canyon with a short section of fixed rope 35-45 minutes to the end of the canyon along a well-marked trail. There is very little elevation gain along this approach.
