Posting gym routes.
|

I was browsing the site yesterday, and I came across the Indoor Walls section of Colorado. I began checking them out, and I ran across something that I found to be quite silly. Under the Glenwood Springs Rec Center there have been numerous plastic routes posted. I couldn't help from laughing. Mountain Project is an extremely informative website, and it is sweet that people are psyched about their gym, but I found this over the top. Within 30 minutes of Glenwood, there is amazing climbing that is accessible all year round. |

Is this really any different than an ice park? |

HA! |

I fully support the Glenwood Springs climbing community in this effort. |

THIS IS SO FRUSTRATING!!! |

On one hand, it is kind of silly. |

Absolutely ridiculous. |

I remember going to the new Movement gym's website (here in boulder) a couple months ago, they had a feature where you could search what routes were posted at any given time in the gym, and people were putting in ticks like you would on MP. "Redpointed, August 7th", "Onsighted", etc. This reminded me of it, thought it was kind of amusing too. :) |

My understanding is that the routes are permanent and will not be changing in the near future. I thought it was a little silly at first too, but after getting some further information about how the routes are set up I think its fine. |

This is kinda like bolted cracks in that if you don't like the bolts......don't clip them. Except for the fact that nobody should really care about the infinite ammount of information on-line, vs the limited and almost sacred nature of real rock. So I am for it, not only for the routes that don't change, but for the temporary ones that have interest for anyone. Who knows, someone could learn a new technique by being able to talk about them on-line. |

It is probably a good thing as with the increased traffic on the routes (now that they are posted) the choss and loose stuff should disappear. Gyms will now be safer all across the country. Plus people can now tick off "the blue route" at gym "X". |

I don't mind people posting the general location of that particular tower, but detailed topos like the one you produced will only encourage traffic to that climb! Whatever happened to keeping things local? Now I'm going to have to deal with throngs of people lining up at the base of that route and interfering with my after-work sesh. |

Besides, someone might even free it and then get all the glory. That route is red-tagged, beatches! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! |

Perhaps the Glenwood gym could start a "www.gymproject.com" I support their community effort, but I agree that a Kapu (taboo) system is healthy for all communities. Besides this forum being a hoot bluff (I especially love crag dwellers sorrows), I hope something is taken away from this. I look forward to seeing gymproject.com evolve |
