Description Suggest change

The Sweet Trail is the area's premiere hiking trail. It runs 4.3 miles from the end of Longmarsh Road in Durham all the way to the shores of Great Bay in Newmarket. The trail weaves past beautiful wetlands, through both dense and open forests, and climbs several small hills. With multiple access points along the way, the trail can be done in sections or as a whole from one end to the other. The trail passes several sections of ledges and boulders throughout it's length providing some good opportunity for fun bouldering. For those looking for a place to start, the Temple is not to be missed. The trail is bisected by Dame Road and the bouldering descriptions have been split into two sub-areas (North and South) using Dame Road as a boundary.

From the original posting of Sweet Trail by "nhclimber" (excerpted prior to deletion, with nhclimber's permission, for clarity) : The Sweet Trail runs from Longmarsh Rd in Durham to the Great Bay in Newmarket just up the road from the nature conservancy's Great Bay office.  A mountain bike or adventurous hiker will be reward with boulders and small cliff bands with amazing potential with problems of all grades.  Dame Rd breaks the trail into 1.8mi and 2.2mi sections with really fun biking albeit one short carry[ Biking is no longer allowed, except for a short 02mi stretch.]

Getting There Suggest change

There are three major access points to the Sweet Trail: Longmarsh Road, Dame Road, and Bay Road. Dame Road roughly bisects the trail while Longmarsh Road accesses the northern terminus of the trail and Bay Road accesses the southern terminus of the trail.

Longmarsh Road: From downtown Durham, take Route 108 south 1.5 miles to Longmarsh Road. Turn left onto Longmarsh Road and follow it 1.3 miles until it ends at a small parking lot and a gate.

Dame Road: From downtown Newmarket, take Route 108 north for .3 miles to Dame Road. Turn right onto Dame Road and follow it 2 miles to a dirt parking lot on the right.

Bay Road: From downtown Newmarket, take Route 108 north a short distance across the Lamprey River bridge. Take your first right onto Bay Road and follow it 1.3 miles to a small dirt parking lot on the left.
