Description Suggest change

This is the southern half of the Sweet Trail. It runs from the trail parking lot on Dame Road about 2 miles to the Bay Road parking lot. A short extension continues another .3 miles from the Bay Road parking lot down to the shores of Great Bay. This section of the Sweet Trail follows Dame Road (along the shoulder of the road for a short stretch) past a pond to an old woods road that heads into a pleasant hardwood forest. From there the trail weaves through some wetlands created by Lubberland Creek and makes it's way south over some small hills back out to the edge of Lubberland Creek and the Bay Road trailhead. Boulders and ledges are scattered throughout the length of this section of trail. The best of which are located at the Dame Road end of this section.

Getting There Suggest change

This section of the Sweet Trail can be accessed either by Dame Road or by Bay Road depending on which boulders you want to climb.

Dame Road: From downtown Newmarket, take Route 108 north for .3 miles to Dame Road. Turn right onto Dame Road and follow it 2 miles to a dirt parking lot on the right. There's a information kiosk here and a map showing the trail. Take the right hand trail here. In just a few minutes the trail will swing back out of the woods onto the shoulder of Dame Road. The trail follows the edge of Dame Road for a quarter mile or so then cuts back into the woods again and wanders through pleasant forest all the way to the Bay Road parking lot.

Use the Dame Road parking for access to Expander, Genesis Block, Pond Boulder, the Swamp Boulders and the Sweet Boulder.

Bay Road: From downtown Newmarket, take Route 108 north a short distance across the Lamprey River bridge. Take your first right onto Bay Road and follow it 1.3 miles to a small dirt parking lot on the left. There's an information kiosk here and a map showing the trail. The trail runs briefly downhill and follows the eastern side of the swampy Lubberland Creek then swings steeply up over the top of a tall hill then wanders all the way out to Dame Road.

Use the Bay Road parking for access to the Lubberland Creek Walls, Hairpin, and the Fort Boulder.
