Description
A large section of steep-to-overhanging rock below, and right of the headwall. This section of cliff is more fractured than the west side, and has darker rock and more seasonal runoff and wet streaks. A prominent steep drainage splits the east wall with the pigeon stool wall. this is the Gruesome gully. Routes on the east side are typically mostly bolted, but are not sport routes and usually require a small rack of cams to protect them well. The base of most of the east side routes are on a hillside, and the area is very sensitive to erosion. Stairs and barriers have been built in the past to help protect the soil, but watch your step as this area tends to be muddy early season or after a rain, and a fall from several points on the trail could be disastrous.
Getting There
From the main wall trail just below the snag buttress, take a somewhat faint trail slightly downhill SE across some mossy slabs into the trees. Take a left turn and head uphill. This is the Gruesome gully trail, which leads to the east side of the main wall.
Alternatively, you can take the East Buttress trail uphill until just past the Diagonal wall. take a left and follow this trail (Gruesome gully trail) which traverses over and up to the main wall.
It is also possible to follow a narrow precarious trail from the base of the snag buttress rightward, or from the base of the pigeon stool wall, which traverses leftward. these last two options involve some 4th class, and is not kid or dog friendly.
