No new route development is allowed until further notice. On July 19, 2019, the US Forest Service issued a notice that it would no longer allow the installation of new bolts or the creation of new climbing routes after manufactured routes were established, then subsequently removed/altered by climbers. In addition, the bolts/fixed anchors on an estimated 50 climbs at Ten Sleep have been affected in some manner that may or may not make them unsafe to climb. The list of altered routes can be found in a drop down on the main, "Ten Sleep Canyon" homepage. The US Forest Service, Powder River Ranger District, is actively working with the local LCO, the Bighorn Climbers' Coalition and Access Fund to develop a sustainable framework for route standards and a Climbing Management Plan for the canyon's future.
Description
Dry Wall is characterized by somewhat of an accordian effect created by the numerous corners located at the left end of the main wall. These corners form many cracks and aretes. Home to more bolted cracks than anywhere else in the canyon, you can stem or handjam your way from 5.10- to 5.13+ at this crag. Recently some higher end testpieces have been added to the steep bulgy features at the left end of the crag. Also several new walls have been opened at the far right side of the cliff.
The sub areas from left to right are: Redacted (DV), Runaway Truck Ramp, Cheese Roof, Last Temptation Wall, Weasel Corner, Grand Parade, Old Times, After Five and finally Lunar Surface Crag.
Dry Wall gets sun early and goes into the shade around 2 PM, great for Summer evenings and Winter mornings. Dry Wall has nearly 100 routes as of the 2013 season.
Getting There
The mileage listed is zeroed where the old road and new road split (Hwy 16 and 435). Please park nose or rear in when parking, especially in small lots.
Mileage: 2.7 miles
Crags accessed: Dry Wall
Parking lot side of road: Right, small lot. It's small, so park at the larger one 0.2 miles uphill if you have a long vehicle.
Approach trail: Slightly uphill of parking but still even with parking, goes left uphill. NOT the right of the two trails.
Approach time: 5 minutes
Dry Wall is located in the lower Canyon, below the switchback. It is across from pullout #5, as described in Aaron Hueys latest guidebook for Ten Sleep Canyon. Park in pullout #5 and cross the road to find the steep trail coming out of the drainage. This trail flatttens out and heads left, down canyon for what is a pleasant 5 minute hike to the wall. If you are visiting the climbs on the right side of Dry Wall, directly above the parking lot, you can take the steep trail angling up and right from the parking area. This trail is relentless but puts you right where your headed without having to traverse the entire wall.
