Description
This magnificent sub-range of the San Juans runs roughly from west to east and contains some of the best mountaineering one could hope for. Electric Peak stands at the western end, while the Guardian guards the eastern end as well as its westerly neighbors, Silex and Storm King, which offer 1500 foot steep north faces. On the western end, the south face of Graystone has a most amazing overhanging concave alpine face.
Getting There
From Silverton, one may simply walk the tracks for the Grenadiers; alternatively, hike down the Molas Switchbacks, Mary's Highland trail, Hunchback Pass from Beartown, etc. etc.
Purgatory Flat trail for the Needles is a casual hike in; Vallecito Creek accesses both mountains west, north, and east.
The trains? Pricy and smelly. Bring a mask, or don't, if you don't mind inhaling coal particulate smoke from the locomotives; additionally, expect typical tourist questions, sometimes asinine. :-|
