Description
Camping is available everywhere in the Tonto National Forest.
Getting There
From Pine drive south on Highway 87 to mile post 266.5 and look for a gravel road on the right. From Phoenix drive to mile post 266.5 and then left on gravel road. Cross cattle guard and drive south through a large clearing (primitive camping) towards the Power Line (Old County Road) and turn right.
Drive about a 1/4 mile to roads end. Park here. Arizona Trail heads west to a fence and gate. Walk past gate a few yards then head left towards the bottom of the hill and work your way downstream until a small rock face (look for cairns) appears on south side of Pine Creek. (Some folks have been walking in Pine Creek to here). Cross creek where the opposite bank becomes a short cliff leading up to a drainage. If you aren't on a worn path, look for it before committing to bushwhacking.
As you arrive at Pine Creek along the climbers' trail, look for the trail which rises sharply on the south side of the creek bed, just before the rock along Pine creek becomes an impassable cliff on both sides, for hikers. Follow this trail up the drainage and across the flat top for a while. Eventually the trail takes you down to the walls.
