Description

Outer Outlet is similar in shape and size to the Inner Outlet, but is located further from Sylvan Lake. It is quite steep on all sides, and there is no easy routes to the summit. Vertigo is a steep detached spire that looms to the east, and Rhinoceros Rock is a slabby rock to the west.

Some fine cracks are on this rock. The historic Conn Diagonal is on the north face, and is a very clever way to the top. Nick of Time is on the South Face, and is a beautiful curving hand/fist crack that works its way to the summit.

Descend by finding a two-bolt rap anchor going over the South Face (near Jugs). Two ropes are recommended, but I believe that it is possible to get off with two 1-rope rappels.

Getting There

Follow the Sylvan Lake trail around the lake and through the tunnel. When the trail forks after the tunnel, take a left, and then a right at the next trail. Follow this to the north as it goes away from Sylvan Lake to a field area. A trail switchbacks up the hill towards middle Earth, and just behind you is Outer Outlet. It is very imposing and one of the larger rock formations in the Needles.

Haha not long since my last find on this formation I see... I found a rope on the rappel off of outer outlet that was a little stuck up. I asked all the climbers I saw if it was theres nobody claimed it. the rope has a core shot so I am not really sure if the owner wants it back. Text me to identify the rope at 6059399698 Jun 6, 2016

Two ropes were found on the summit of Conn Diagonal. For others new to the area, the two bolt hangers that you see after the finger crack that i believe is 5.8 are not rappel anchors. There are nice rap anchors after doing a little step across on the summit. I would not recommend putting ropes through the hangers!!! If these are your ropes please contact me at 6059399698 by text to identify them. Aug 31, 2015

Rather than taking the path that passes the giant chockstone, take the well-worn trail that skirts the northwestern edge of the outlets. To get to this trail, park at the Sylvan General Store parking area. Walk down toward the lake from the parking lot and make a left (heading NW) onto the trail that cirlces lake walkway/trail. Before you reach the outlets, where the damn and the path that passes the giant chockstone are located, you will find a trail that heads to the NW/W, thereby going to the leftside of the outlet/rock formation nearest to the lake. After walking a hundred yards or so on this path, you will come to two brown, small buildings owned by the Sylvan Lake Resort. There was a couple of paddle boats and an old couch laying around the buildings as of July 2008. Stay on the trail, which veers to the right or NW, and do not head west onto the road. The trail will take you down a gentle slope. The Inner Outlets will be the third rock formation/fin on your right. The Outer Outlets are the next formation down hill. The approach from the parking lot to the Inner Oulets should only take 10-15 minutes at most. Jul 15, 2008
