Description
Not sure who did this line, or even if he/she started from where we started; the FA may have reached the small pine tree from a start further left, but the very old sling on the big pine tree at the top was nearly certain proof that at least the top of the route had been climbed previously. ( If you get there you’ll see that no one in their right mind would have climbed DOWN to the big tree just to use it as a rap station!) When climbing the route Paul saw an older bolt on the slab down and left of the small pine tree, hence the possibility that the FA started further left than we did.
We also saw a bolt on the slab 25 - 35 ft right of the line we took, which speaks to the very good possibility of a fourth route…..
We TR’d the route from the big tree after replacing the very old sling but “ recycling” the quick link.
P1 Move up leftish on slab heading (photo of PC starting the route.) for the small pine tree. At the tree ( a saw to remove 1 or 2 branches would help ) step up ( crux) to a horizontal crack hidden from below. Then follow a thin seam ( “cruxy” PG-13) to the anchor on the big pine tree. 160-180ft 5.7 +/-
Location
Up right about 50-75 ft from the starts of routes 1 and 2. Look for a small ( 2022) pine tree about 120 - 140 ft up with a big pine tree 30-40 ft above it. Start on the slab about 25 +/- ft right of the drop line from the lower tree. If your there in the late fall, beware the 5.9 oak leaves laying on the steep ground just below the start!
