Alex Honnold Soloing Taipei 101
|

About a year ago there was a lot of buzz that Honnold was going to solo Taipei 101 in Taiwan. Anyone know whatever happened with that? I can't find anything about it online, so I'm assuming it never went down. Anyone know why? |

I believe it was a logistics issue. Building owners were not into it. |

Taispray 101 lol. It's in like a week |

Legit thread resurrection right here. I'm so curious what's in it for everyone involved, while acknowledging we'll never get straight answers. Albert Hangboard gets a payday, Netflix appeals to a new market maybe they haven't before, I'm assuming the building owners get a payday too. The money exchanging hands behind the scenes would be interesting to get insight on. |

It's a little weird because the whole premise is basically to trick laypeople into thinking it's super impressive and/or they might see someone die on live TV. In reality it's like 10 pitches of 5.6, Alan Handhold eats that sh*t for breakfast daily Also, holy necrothread batman! |

The recent climbing gold podcast talks about this a little bit, and I think the next episode is supposed to be with Alex about this topic. Alex’s co-host even mentioned that the whole thing seemed a bit strange to him. It seems like he genuinely wants to climb this building, and this was the way he found to do it legally. I’m sure what ever he’s getting paid is a influence too! |

I'm interested to see if he climbs what looks like the easiest route up the dihedral, or takes the proud line up the face. It also looks like there's 8 big ledges along the way which I feel like could mess with the head game having to start and stop, and going back and forth between free soloing and decking potential. I also heard he's nervous for the first jump move off the ground. Alex is a big boy though he's got this! Should be fun to watch |

Is he running low money. Why the publicity stunt? |

He didn't do it for long, it turns out and he quit climbing altogether for many, many years as a direct result of a fall. |

The whole event is a cash grab that won't impress any rock climbers. Climbing the building is cool I guess. But doing it for a netflix special is laaaaaame. Really looking forward to how Hollywood tries to create plot drama out of it. |

What if he just thinks it will be a cool adventure on a neat structure and doesn’t really care about the difficulty? I doubt the building owners would let him do this without making it into a crazy publicity stunt anyways (they want increased tourism and maybe Netflix money). He gets to climb a cool thing, he gets paid, and maybe makes some money for his charity, so why not? |
