Interestingly, plant-based protein powders may be the worst offenders, even though protein from plants is generally thought to be healthier

There are quite a few studies out there:

Here’s one

And another

You get the idea. There’s biologic plausibility, as certain amino acids (BCAA, methionine) activate aging/disease pathways (mostly via mTOR). Animal proteins are rich in these AAs relative to plants. There’s also issues with saturated fat and fiber content (higher and lower, respectively) when animal products are consumed in favor of plants.

It’s a complicated picture, but it’s probably not a coincidence that every long lived population consumes a plant based diet, and none of them eat a ton of protein. But pop nutrition has become so laser focused on preventing sarcopenia they’re missing the big picture: cardiovascular disease and cancer kill far more people than falls.

ETA I thought you were asking about the healthfulness of plant vs. animal protein, rather than impurities in powders. But I see Li Hu has that covered.

Nice looking boulder, Daniel. Here I am bouldering with Peter Croft back maybe fifteen years ago at the Happy Boulders near Bishop. Well, he's actually bouldering, I'm just hanging around.

What's with all the snow pics? Still nice weather here in the Gunks!
I snagged a partner and went up Betty. Nearly lost a tricam, but a talented fellow retrieved it after we gave up.
It was pretty crowded out there today, but that's one of the advantages to Betty being so popular. People do like a challenge.

Questions for Kilter climbers-

Are you allowed to match hands?

Can hand holds also be foot holds?

That’s a cool photo. If you visited today, there would pads surrounding every boulder and beautiful young women to give you a spot on your project. I’ve always been more inspired by the bouldering out in the buttermilk country. Have you bouldered there, and if you have what is your opinion of the climbing there? Oh, and by the way, I think your B scale is a cooler and more individualistic way to describe difficulty.

Here are a couple Dennis Jensen topos from the buttermilk area complete with 2 Dale Bard (RIP) b2’s on the Drifter boulder. Those problems are now referred to as V6 and V7.

I'll stick to being mostly carnivore. Thanks

You can bore yourself with the details on why plant protein isn't bioavailable enough for me...

I’ve been in that thread, which is littered with suspect nutrition advice.

But you’re right, plant protein isn’t as bioavailable as animal sources. That’s good news, because most of us should probably be eating more plants anyway.

Hand matching is allowed unless the problem is specifically “no matching.”  Hand holds are also footholds.  You are also supposed to match the finish hold.

Don’t get too hung up about the grades, especially at 50 degrees or steeper. Lots of the lower grade problems are set and “confirmed” by super strong climbers and can be sandbagged.  The grades at 40 degrees are somewhat more consistent, having more ascents, but not always.

I made a trainer of my Arizona project that doesn’t make sense as an “official” problem since you climb the right side of the board then drop off and climb the left side, but it approximates the number of moves and the redpoint crux quite well.  It is a fun feature of the Kilter Board that you can make up your own problems.

Can't you always make up your own problems on any board or wall?

Thanks Ward. Our home gym has a Woods board, which I like a lot. Very easy to set your own problems. But another local gym has a kilter and it was more fun than I remembered it to be.

We call it the ‘hate America’ rally that will happen Saturday. Let’s see who shows up for that,” Johnson said Wednesday at a news conference with other House GOP leaders. “I bet you you’ll see Hamas supporters, I bet you’ll see antifa types, I bet you’ll see the Marxists on full display, the people who don’t want to stand and defend the foundational truths of this republic."

It was very scary out there.

Very similar demographic present for the same event in my small town. Why is it that older populations often dominate these events?

For some reason Boulder's rally starts at 3:30. I'll be heading out in a few minutes.

Advice I have received from various sources for today’s rally:  be polite. Lower your eyes and your voice. If you are approached by Proud Boys, Oath Keepers or Patriot Front be respectful.  Don’t antagonize anyone.  Be demure.  Don’t do or say ANYTHING that could upset our president.  Stay submissive.

Just exactly like protests in the 60’s.

Probably just depends on the local demographics. There were tons of younger people including families with children here in Raleigh.

Daniel, The Buttermilks were after my time, although here I am taking a look at one of them. Impressive.
