I love how they call these guys climbers. Do you see any indication that they aren't just backpackers.

They look more like lost, clueless, eco-irresponisble Darwin Awards candidates.

That looks like Zion area.

The chick has a climbing helmet hanging off her pack.

It does look like she has draws hanging off of her kit.

I'll be the first to say this could be any one of us; you're either only climbing trade routes or are half-elf if you've never had a close call like that.

gotcha...

Sure, Crisco, we've all been on something sketchy, but:

1. I wouldn't lean up against a huge boulder that is just resting in scree and loose dirt.

2. I would have moved after she sent down the first set of rocks instead of standing with the camera.

3. I would yell "rock"

Its more the oblivious attitude they have that makes me question the intellect/experience.

No, I don't think so. The soil is very sandy in this video and there isn't anything like that in Eldo.

Looks a lot like Zion to me. They do kinda look like mouth breathers, but more because they were filming a loose class II approach than knocking stuff down. That type of thing happens in really loose rock/dirt gullies in the desert if you aren't really careful.

Does look like Zion.

Soil there can be awful.

Wierd, wild video.

I think something like this could really happen to anybody. Did you see her face at the end? That chic was truly freaking out.

Mike Anderson · · Colorado Springs, CO · Joined Nov 2004 · Points: 3,541

That can, and does happen to anyone. Eric Draper is one of the most prolific climbers in Zion history, and yet he broke his foot in a similar situation on an approach near the West Temple. It's always a good idea to avoid scrambling up right underneath someone.

If you think this couldn't happen to you then you're kidding yourself.

You don't even need loose dirt, try climbing the NE face of North Maroon, or up on the side of Blanca.

Big raining rocks are something one should always be aware of. Whenever possible, climb together or if you're the lower climber keep out of possible rock fall line and always be aware. A helmet will help with the little hailstones falling down, but a rock any bigger than a toaster, that has more than 10 ft of acceleration will probably be toast for you, helmet or not!

Uhmm, where did I say that rockfall wouldn't happen to me?

What wouldn't happen to me is getting caught filming after some rocks have already just flown my way, leaning against an obviously unstable rock, and not warning any poor saps below.

Also, I'd be wearing my helmet on that terrain.

The bottom line is that I don't kid myself about the possibilities of bad things happening, which is why I wouldn't be behaving so foolishly.

I'm just of the opinion, like somebody else here posted, that the rockfall isn't what makes them foolhardy. It's their attitude and response to the situation.

Cheers,
Evan
