Climbing Near Mendocino, California

Located within Navarro River Redwoods State Park in Mendocino County, Navarro Beach Boulder is a solid chunk of sandstone about 20 feet high, but its height may vary seasonally depending on the level of the sand. A campground with 10 first-come-first-serve campsites is located in the parking lot. Because most of the climbs are very easy (5.0-5.4), easy (5.5-5.6) or moderate (5.8), the boulder is a good site for beginning climbers and for learning to lead with trad gear. A few steep 5.10a-c (V0- to V0) climbs are fun (there should be some harder climbs or variations, but my time was limited--I'll definitely return). Although the rock is solid and each climb has solid holds, beware of loose rock and sand-encrusted holds. A huge, rusty bolt on top of the boulder can be used as an anchor for top-roping or leading, but it is about 12 feet back from the edge so long slings or a short static rope are required. The flat, soft sand at the base is excellent for bouldering and can even substitute for a crash pad. I cannot find any online information about the boulder's climbing history. I first climbed here on 9 October 2010. The names and ratings are mine, subject to change, of course, pending further information. From the junction of Highways 1 and 128 (between Albion to the north and Elk to the south), turn south on Highway 1, cross the bridge and immediately turn right onto Navarro Beach Road. Continue about 0.75 mile to the parking lot, then follow a trail just above the beach for several hundred feet toward the south to the obvious large boulder.

LOW TIDE ONLY. be cautious of swells and rock being flakey in some minor sections.   Pull off at the headlands parking slightly north of Pudding Creek, straight out to the point and then on the left side on the gravel beach.

Small bouldering area on the northern shore of Blues Beach Trailhead Head south of Westport, CA (2.5km, roughly 3 mins) on shoreline highway until you reach Blues Beach trailhead. There is beach access parking (beach parking is allowed however, not recommended for low clearance vehicles or non 4WD)
