Description
This area is about a 20-minute gradual uphill hike on the Kimpu San Highway from the cable that blocks driving access on the road. The crags in this sector are roughly 10 minutes further up the highway from the Gamma Slabs (another area with moderate routes). In early November, the Phoenix cliff is in the sun from about 11am-2pm.
The routes are primarily sport, have anchors and can be done with a 50m rope.
Getting There
From the cable that blocks driving further up the Kimpu San Highway, walk up the road for roughly 10 minutes. You will pass a pumphouse looking building on the right and then Gamma Slabs, also on the right. Continue up the highway past a pipeline crossing the stream on the left and a series of retaining walls on the right. After roughly 20 minutes uphill from the cable, you will come to a flat, open area. Phoenix Rock, the lowest of the Karasawa area crags, is right at the edge of the highway in this open area. The front face of the crag is fully exposed and should dry quickly. The steeper, left face is in the trees.
