Description
As of March 2025, the Dutch Sector is the southernmost (closest to the Red Anchor) roped climbing area on the Grapefield cliffs. The cliff here is roughly 60 feet high. Unfortunately, the lead bolts in this sector are all badly corroded.
The area was originally opened by three Dutch climbers - Tristan Monzon, Nadine Salas, and Eric Suyker starting in 1996. They along with the Club Active Aruba were responsible for all the top anchor markings and route setting.
The routes are generally in the shade by 11am and stay that way for the rest of the day. The beach is a few hundred yards away and is generally deserted other than kite surfers. Cars routinely drive along the north-south running road checking out the island and there are lots of goats above, on and below the cliff.
As of March 2025, the anchors atop the routes appeared to be in fine shape and the routes names near each anchor legible. Bring at least one cordalette and some padding material when setting up top ropes. The easiest way to access the anchors is from Golfweg Road that runs above the cliff.
Getting There
The roughly 30 climbs in this sector were established by Dutch climbers circa 1996-98 and are located at 12.446683, -69.881091.
Coming from San Nicholas, turn left at the Red Anchor and drive north 0.9 miles (1.4km) on a decent dirt road. The limestone escarpment will immediately come into view on the left, starting under the prison. At a small wash that crosses the north-south running dirt road, turn left (W) off the main road and drive 560 feet (160m) on a dirt road right up to the base of the cliff. There are five portions, each abutting the neighboring portion. The road leading up to the base of the cliff will bring you to the right end of the Bringamosa portion and left end of the Tears portion.
South to North (L-R), the portions are:
Bringamosa
Tears Left
Tears Right
Garbage
