Description

Per [201577324 Gerry Roach's Top Ten Flatirons come from his guidebook, Flatiron Classics, which lays out 53 classic easy routes in the Flatirons. Of those 53, ten of them were chosen by Roach as the "Top Ten". Bill Wright and Tom Karpeichik were the first to complete the link-up in-a-day in 1999, though Buzz Burrell had done a version of this in 1990 in which he climbed Satan's Slab instead of Stairway to Heaven . The "route" is complicated and requires a wide range of Flatiron skills, trickery, fitness, and knowledge. The 53 Classics, as well as the Top Ten, are slowly ticked off by many, but completing the Top Ten in a Day (TTIAD) is a hefty task! The full link-up car-to-car from Chautauqua is somewhere around 14-15 miles with 8,000 feet of vertical gain.

First Flatiron, East Face Direct.

Third Flatiron, East Face.

Third Flatiron, Friday’s Folly.

Green Mountain Pinnacle, Takin’ Care of Business.

Stairway to Heaven, South Ridge, Skunk Canyon.

Back Porch, East Face.

Pellea, East Face.

Fatiron, East Face.

Maiden, North Face.

Matron, North Face.

Getting There

Traditionally, these are done north to south beginning at Chautauqua and ending at South Mesa. Hard men opt for the roundtrip.

[Hide Comment] Taylor, sorting is challenging on MP. While I agree TTIAD belongs as commentary, it has gained popularity, and on the Flatirons page you have 4 groups: Central, North, Sacred Cliffs, and South. TTIAD covers every area north to south of the Flatirons, and that's why I added to the areas on the Flatirons page. Sep 17, 2024
[Hide Comment] I'm working on it now, did as suggested by Taylor Brown, and added it to the resources page. I'll also work on a higher quality description with historical info and beta. Sep 17, 2024
[Hide Comment] Taylor and Josh, I added details to the route description and a .gpx file. There is also a Google Earth picture that points to all 10. Thoughts? Sep 17, 2024

[Hide Comment] Also having the East Face of Pellea and the Backporch and not Freeway is an actual cardinal sin and should result in 3 days in stockades in the middle of Chatauqua. Sep 18, 2024
[Hide Comment] Taylor from the admin:

It seems like this belongs as a separate item. So, I added your info in a new pop-up and cited you.

Thanks,

[Hide Comment] Maybe one way of organizing it would be to have a separate "area" under the Flatirons called "Link-ups", then folks could throw them in there without cluttering the other area pages(?). Sep 20, 2024

[Hide Comment] One notable challenge is there is no good way to put these photos into a section on an area page or pop-up. One could add them to the subarea, but that would bury them. I'm still not sure what is best in this particular situation...mulling it still. Sep 24, 2024
