Description Suggest change

The areas described here are all North of the end of the road. This is the area with the highest concentration of climbs on the island as well the Bothy on the very northern tip. All the climbing here is trad on some beautiful Lewisian Gneiss. The crags range from small rocky outcrops on the hillsides, to impossing sea cliffs.

Getting There Suggest change

There is only one main road north on Raasay so its very straightforward! Drive off the ferry and follow the road along the shore to a junction at an old farm building (Steading). Turn left (towards the Raasay House entrance) and follow the road around the back of Raasay House and north along the coast. At the next junction (just uphill after passing through Holoman) take a left toward Brochel. Follow this road all the way to the end (20 minutes). The final 3 miles are called Calum's Road and was built by Calum Macleod in an attempt to keep the communities of the northern end connected to the rest of the world in the 1980's. Today only one family still lives in Arnish. The location marked on the map for this page is the parking area at the end of Calum's Road.

Note: The road north of Holoman is quite rugged in places. It's drivable in most vehicles if you are careful and drive slowly. The road is entirely single track with passing places every few hundred feet, but be prepared to reverse back to the nearest passing place if neccessary as the road is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass.
